The Dos and Don’ts of B2B Social Media

You may think that a B2B business doesn’t have a place on social media because your target audience isn’t the common consumer. You’d be wrong. Whether you’re selling manufacturing software or a consumer product like makeup, you’re selling to people. Buyers, HR managers, plant supervisors – they’re all people who have interests, wants and emotions.

When it comes to social media, there’s one truth that reigns supreme: give your audience what they want.  Just like we do every day at Square One Creative group, placing yourself in the mindset of your customer is key. Here are a few simple dos and don’ts when it comes to engaging with your customers on social media:

  • DO use a conversational tone. Use words like “we” and “our” when speaking about your company.
  • DO engage with customers. Whether they’re positive or voicing a complaint, responding to your customers will show you’re a business that cares.
  • DO master the art of social selling. You’ve got their attention, now turn them into a lead. They’re likely to be more receptive to your message in a social setting like Facebook or LinkedIn.
  • DON’T limit yourself to one platform. LinkedIn is great, and it’s probably where you’ll find most of your customers, but it shouldn’t be your only social space. Display your message through multiple platforms to reinforce your brand and reach different folks.
  • DON’T be afraid to have a sense of humor. Social media exists to share information, communicate and have fun. Join in!
  • DON’T limit yourself to industry-specific posts. Your customers (aka people) likely have interests that don’t exclusively involve hiring software (or whatever your business is selling). Talking about broader areas of interest will broaden your base of followers.

Social media should be exactly that – social. Just because you market to businesses doesn’t mean you have to be all business. Remember the values that guide your company and show your softer, more personable side. The sales will follow.
